Reduce File Size: The primary goal is to make PDF files smaller, which makes them easier to share via email, upload to websites, and store efficiently.Maintain Quality (Ideally): Good compression tools aim to reduce file size without significant loss of visual quality in the document. However, aggressive compression might result in some degradation, especially in images.Optimize Images: This is often the most significant factor in PDF size reduction. Tools may:

  • Reduce Image Resolution (DPI): Lowering the dots per inch can drastically decrease file size, especially for images intended for screen viewing rather than printing.
  • Change Image Compression: Different compression algorithms (like JPEG for color images and ZIP or CCITT for black and white) can be applied to reduce size. The level of JPEG compression can be adjusted, with higher compression resulting in smaller files but potentially more artifacts.
  • Remove Unnecessary Image Data: This includes metadata or data not essential for displaying the image.
    • Subset Fonts: Include only the specific characters used in the document rather than the entire font family.
    • Remove Embedded Fonts: If the document’s intended viewers are likely to have the necessary fonts installed, the tool might remove embedded fonts to save space.
  • Remove Redundant Data: PDFs can sometimes contain unused objects, metadata, or other redundant information that compression tools can identify and remove.
  • Optimize Document Structure: Some tools can streamline the internal organization of the PDF file, making it more efficient.
  • Offer Different Compression Levels: Many tools provide options to choose between different levels of compression (e.g., low, medium, high), allowing users to balance file size reduction with quality preservation.
  • Batch Processing: Some software allows you to compress multiple PDF files at once, saving time.
